POLAND CANCELS VISIT

BY ISRAELI OFFICIALS

TO DISCUSS

PROPERTY RESTITUTION

The ruling Law and Justice Party

views Poland as a victim of World War II,

and that therefore Poland

should not be required

to pay damages to other victims.

Poland's Foreign Affairs Ministry
canceled a planned visit to Warsaw
by an Israeli delegation
who intended to discuss
the return of property
to families of Jews
murdered in the Holocaust,
the ministry announced on Monday.

...

On Saturday, hundreds of Poles
protested in Warsaw
against a US law
that requires the State Department
to compile reports on
how certain European countries
handle restitution of property
wrongfully seized
during the time of the Holocaust.

Some of the marchers held signs
calling claimants "Holocaust hyenas,"
while others were heard saying
"stop the Jewish claims."

The ruling Law and Justice Party
views Poland as a victim of World War II,
and that therefore Poland
should not be required
to pay damages to other victims.

We will not allow any damages
to be paid to anyone
because it is us who should get damages,”
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki insisted
at an election rally on Saturday,
according to the state-run PAP news agency.

The cancellation drew the ire of
senior Blue and White official Yair Lapid,
who commented on Twitter,
"Once again the Polish government
embarrasses the government of Israel
regarding the memory of the Holocaust.
It started with the Holocaust-denial law,
and has now reached
the issue of property restitution
(about which one could say
'you murdered and inherited')."
