Debate on the Concept of Shame - Professor Sheikha Al-Jassem

Professor Sheikha Al-Jassem during Debate on the Concept of Shame in Kuwaiti Society: I Consider the Niqab to Be a Human Rights Violation

A TV debate on the concept of shame in Kuwaiti society, broadcast on Al-Majlis TV on July 21, pitted lawyer Abd Al-Rahman Al-Tahous against Professor of Philosophy Sheikha Al-Jassem and activist Salma Al-Essa. Al-Tahous talked about the "problem" of girls leaving home to live on their own, saying: "Our society rejects this out of hand." Al-Essa responded that the concept of shame varies from family to family. "What is acceptable to you may not be acceptable to somebody else," she said. Professor Al-Jassem said: "Personally, I consider [the niqab] to be a violation of human rights, because a woman can hardly see or breathe," but that "a woman can wear the niqab if she feels like it."
